Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. St. Luke situates the miraculous catch of fish at the very beginning of the ministry of Jesus, as the event that inspired Peter and companions to follow Jesus. In St. John’s gospel the incident by being situated after the Resurrection has a different point. Remember the saying: you can’t go home again. For Peter and the rest to resume their previous lives after Easter could not happen. They were no longer fishermen, they were now apostles commissioned to bring good news into a hurting world. We too are different since we are Easter people. Since Jesus is risen from the dead, what we say and do must reflect the new reality of the kingdom of God present in our midst.
