The Fourth Gospel is carefully constructed. Therefore, when you see a sentence which seems to be random you can be sure that it is not. We are to find the inspired meaning behind what St. John writes. For example, in John 7 there is an argument about who Jesus was that involved the crowd, the guards, the chief priests, the Pharisees, including their own Nicodemus. Then we read the seeming throw away line. “Then each went to his own house.” The evangelist wants us to understand that the protagonists in the argument were not willing to find common ground. They “returned to their own corner” to prepare to fight again instead of seeking consensus. We need to work to find common ground in our time, yes?
