Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” I used to have a poster with that saying of Jesus in bold print along the top. In smaller print on the bottom it read, “But first, it will make you miserable.” Think how that operates in fact: the truth is that the “original sin” of our country was slavery. Today, confronting the legacy of racism is making us miserable. The truth is that global warming threatens life on the planet. Making the changes that will heal the environment will make us miserable. On a personal level, the truth is that we are children of God. Undergoing the conversion to be who God made us to be is a constant effort.
