“It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” This word of the first followers of Jesus must become our word as well. A modern theologian, Karl Rahner, put it this way: Christians of tomorrow will either be mystics, people who have experienced something, or they will nothing. In our skeptical age the only effective way to be Church is to be a witness of what we have seen and heard. Simply reporting what we have learned, what others have taught us, will not suffice. We have to share our own experiences of God’s grace, forgiveness, mercy and love in our lives. The world does not need information about God but witnesses to God’s presence and action. It is a person of faith talking about what the faith means to them that will make a difference in the world today.
