Abraham is featured in the book of Genesis, in John’s gospel, and throughout the Bible. He is invoked as the father of faith for Jews, Christians and Muslims. One of the heroes of the post-Vatican II era, Dom Helder Camara, used the image of “Abrahamic minorities” as the key to a more just and peaceful world. The instinct of faith is that you need to know your story to know who you are. In our country there is a movement not to talk about the ugly parts of our national story. The example of the Bible suggests that is a mistaken. It was only by confronting the sins of the past that Israel was able to repent and to be converted into the future.
