Historians see in the times of Jesus a society with a great deal of diversity: the Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Herodians and several other groups all co-existed. However, when Jesus came on the scene that spirit of tolerance died. Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?” Why? It seems the diversity was founded on a “you do your thing and I do mine” philosophy. Jesus came challenging people to change, to conversion. Then, as now, people get comfortable in their own “live and let live” world and the call to change causes a defensive reaction. For us, Lent is an ongoing call to conversion to greater compassion, generosity and forgiveness.
