When a speaker is introduced someone talks about her degrees, her accomplishments, her books, her awards. You can imagine someone introducing Jesus by talking about his education at Nazareth, the miracles he worked, the sermons he preached. But Our Lord thought that those things were not what defined him. It was only when he was “lifted up” on the cross that we would know who he truly was. No wonder the people asked, “Who are you?” Answering that question is important for our own relationship with Jesus. Perhaps it also challenges us to act in ways that people ask that of us. Who are you that spend time helping the poor? that forgive someone who has hurt you? that spends time with the elderly?
