“Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” This saying of Jesus can be taken to stress the importance of gathering in prayer. Of course, personal prayer is necessary but public prayer, going to Church with others, provides the forum to get over my tendency to create God in MY image and likeness and see a broader vision. This is saying gets its true power in context. Jesus is talking about how to resolve conflict among believers. Promising to be with us when we are “gathered together” in prayer while we are in conflict assures us that the way forward through division and polarization does not depend on us but on God acting in us.
