One of the curiosities of our age is how in certain quarters the Bible is invoked to justify a particular political opinion, for example to condemn homosexuals. At the same time some ignore Biblical passages that differ from their political stance. In the Book of Deuteronomy we read: “For the LORD, your God, is the God of gods … and befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him. So you too must befriend the alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.” Which says that for us to have a genuine Biblical perspective the Scripture must form our values and attitudes and not be used as a “proof text” for opinions that we hold prior to a careful reading of the Biblical text.
