The first five books of the Bible, the Jewish Torah, the Books of Moses, hold a pride of place in the Bible. Scholars call them the Pentateuch, “the five books.” The sixth book of the Bible, the Book of Joshua, is part of the same tradition and continues the same themes — so much so that some scholars refer to a Hexateuch, the six books. Moses had died before the Hebrews reached the promised land and it was up to Joshua to complete the Exodus. The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know I am with you, as I was with Moses. God is the primary actor in all six books.
