Jesus said, “Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.” I’ve heard sermons, perhaps you have, urging us to be as “innocent” as children. My guess is that those giving such sermons grew up as an only child and have had no children of their own. Children can be mean, selfish, cruel, stubborn. When Jesus tells us to “become like children” he is not urging innocence but the word he uses is to be “humble.” Humility means knowing your place and what children know is that they are dependent on others. They receive all the time without a requirement to repay. We must be humble enough to understand that all that we are is a gift from God.
