During the national debate of how to confront our besetting sin of racism you sometimes hear the remark, “But I didn’t enslave anybody.” Which is true, but somewhat irrelevant since sin has consequences. We read in Ezekiel, I will judge you, house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. It is our current ways that we need to confront. While the nation has made some progress in addressing discrimination in education, housing and jobs the lingering effects of 450-plus years of slavery and Jim Crow still infect the body politic. Think of it as similar to long covid. While the virus might have been eliminated the body still needs to do alot of rehabilitation before it returns to full health.
