Jesus knows the human condition well. As St. Paul puts it he did not “cling” to divinity but instead shared human life completely. Thus, Jesus knows that there will be conflict and division wherever people find themselves. He describes a three step process to move toward reconciliation. First, one on one. Talk to the one you are estranged from without judgment or blame but to find commonality. If that doesn’t work find a trustworthy companion to be an objective participant. Perhaps the third party can find a way for the two of you toward common ground. If that doesn’t work involve the community. A rift between two individuals ripples out to impact the entire fellowship. Can we as a group of Christians learn together how to live as one. Finally, if all else fails, treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. We know how Jesus treated Gentiles and tax collectors, right? With kindness, forgiveness, welcome. Sometimes a wound that cannot be healed must be transcended.
