Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, a “megachurch,” once commented that in his years in the seminary not one professor pointed out that over 2,000 bible verses direct believers to care for the poor. That reminds us that we read the Bible through our own lens and ignore uncomfortable Biblical teaching. For example, in the book of Deuteronomy we read: “the LORD of lords, the great God … befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him. So you too must befriend the alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.” In the current national debate over immigration this teaching somehow gets lost. Believers in the Bible must remember that God cared for our immigrant ancestors and we should do the same to current immigrants.
