Covenant is what makes the Chosen People chosen. Abraham entered into a covenant with God. At Mt Sinai Moses renewed the covenant. Upon entering the Promised Land Joshua had the entire people acknowledge acceptance of the Covenant. They would honor God and God would take care of them. The complete destruction of the nation and temple is seen by the prophets as payback for the people not upholding their end of the bargain. By rights, God could abandon them. However, Ezekiel proclaims a new kind of covenant. I will remember the covenant I made with you and I will set up an everlasting covenant with you, even though I am not bound by my covenant with you. God will love us no matter what!
