Moses, the servant of the LORD, died as the LORD had said; and he was buried in the ravine opposite Beth-peor in the land of Moab, but to this day no one knows the place of his burial. The Rabbis wondered, if Moses was buried but no one knows where he is buried, who buried him? They decided God did it! Moses is never portrayed as resentful or regret theful of the fact that he never entered the promised land. He understood that he had fulfilled his role and it was others who would benefit. Thebook/movie called The Man who Planted Trees tells of a shepherd who, each day as he followed the flock through the desolate hills, planted one hundred acorns. He did this every day for decades. While not all the seeds grew, enough did that over time a forest developed. It changed the entire ecosystem. Instead of dry chaparral, the trees held the moisture in the soil which supported all sorts of plants and animals. What had been desolate started to flourish. The shepherd never got to enjoy his handiwork but countless others did. In our lives we frequently must “plant a seed” and not enjoy the fruit. Our role is to be kind, compassionate, generous, forgiving. We might not see what good it does to act in that way but we can be assured that God will give the growth.
