All too often the troubles we are dealing with seem overwhelming. What can I do in the face of endemic racism, gun violence, hunger and poverty, hostility to immigrants, resistance to necessary health measures? The Bible’s response is given to Gideon when he was confronting an overwhelming problem: “Go with the strength you have.” God didn’t expect Gideon to be a superhero, just to do what he could with the strength he had. When Gideon objected that would not be enough God answered, “I shall be with you.” That is our story as well. We only have to do what we can with what we have. It might not seem like much to us but our God can multiply five loaves to feed five thousand.
