Jesus described himself as “meek and humble of heart.” That means it was not about him; he always referred back to the one he called his Father. “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good.” No doubt this is what was so attractive to his followers. The meekness of Jesus should not be confused with weakness. The “sweet Jesus” of piety does not reflect the challenge he extended to others. (Jesus was not executed because he was sweet.) Take, for example, the confrontation he had with the young man. Jesus challenged him to give himself: “When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad.” True happiness is only found when we throw ourselves in God’s arms.
