Jesus warns us about certain religious leaders: “do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.” St. Francis of Assisi is supposed to have said: Preach at all times. If absolutely necessary, use words. Pope Paul VI in his must read 1975 document, Evangelii Nuntiandi said something similar: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” And Pope Francis keeps pushing church leaders into more direct pastoral life until they smell like the sheep. As the saying goes, if you are going to talk the talk, you’d better walk the walk.
