Andrew Carnegie, at the time the richest man in America, was asked how much money he wanted. His response: “Just a little bit more.” That is almost the default position of our species. We want more than what we have. Russia, already the largest nation on earth, went to war to get more land. Billionaires pay their employees as little as they can so they will have more money. One of the underlying causes of the divisions that exist in our country is that a segment of the population fears that those other people are getting more than they are. It’s in the Bible too. “They thought that they would receive more.” This hunger for more is built into our DNA because we are made for more, we are made for God. The problem arises when we substitute something other than God imagining it will satisfy us. As the African bishop, St. Augustine, put it: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, Oh Lord.”
