God is not fair. “God’s ways are not our ways,” said the Prophet. Think of the cliches in our culture: there is no such thing a free lunch; if you work hard enough you will succeed; a penny saved is a penny earned. The mentality is: this much work gets you that much reward. We are tempted to apply that to God. If we go to church more often and keep the commandments and say our prayers then we will earn our reward of a place in heaven. But God is not fair, God is generous. Jesus challenges us to rethink our understanding of God. “Are you envious because I am generous?” Happily God does not give us what we deserve but what we need.
