The angel of the Lord announces to Gideon that the Lord is with him. To which Gideon responds: “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us?” Don’t we feel like that at times? When we are dealing with a health crisis or a family emergency we wonder where God is. The angel goes on to explain to Gideon that God is with him as long as he plays his part. What, Gideon answers, little old me? What difference can the likes of me make? In response to which the Biblical author interposes the very voice of God: “I shall be with you,” the LORD said to him. Yes, the Lord shall be with us too in the troubles of life.
