Pirophets not only denounce when people abandon God, they also console when people feel that God has abandoned them. That was the role that Ezekiel played when the people of Israel were taken into exile and lost land, nation, and temple. In his prophetic vision he reminds the people that despite how bereft, how dry, how dead, they felt, God was not finished. Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life. We can apply that word to our own spiritual journey for often we too enter into a spirit of dryness, a feeling of being lost. Our prayers don’t seem to be answered, we don’t feel connected to God, everything appears to be coming apart. It is in those moments of dryness that we need to hang in there with God. God is not finished with us, either. We must wait on the Spirit of the Lord to blow into our hearts as well.
