Several years ago a teen ager said she didn’t like Jesus because he was “stuck up.” “What do you mean,” I asked. She said, “It’s like he said, ‘I am the light of the word,’ and like ‘I am the Good Shepherd.'” I told her that she needed to look at the gospels again for Jesus was, in fact, constantly pointing beyond himself toward the one he called His Father. In fact, when the demons called him out he silenced them. Jesus rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. Jesus was clear about his identity but he was who he was because he was on a mission to bring Good News into a hurting world.
