“Stay awake!” “Watch!” Jesus felt an urgency that all too often we lack. We kind of get lulled into a “same old, same old” mentality that blunts the timeliness of our life in God. When the doctor tells us to remove the tumor now before it spreads, we heed his warning and schedule the surgery as soon as possible. However, when we are told we have a chronic condition that will require long term treatment we easily let things slip. Jesus looks on the call to conversion as more of an emergency appendectomy than the common cold. The psalmist put it, “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” It is today, in the thought of Jesus. Today is the day to become more compassionate, more forgiving, more generous, more loving. Tomorrow is not promised us and the grace of this day is sufficient to transform us into the beloved children of God we are made to be.
