We’ve all had the experience of someone reporting on an event differently than you remember. Something similar can occur in comparing the way Matthew, Mark and Luke report the events of Jesus’ life. They each saw things from their own point of view. In this way the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in each evangelist enriches our understanding of the mission of Jesus. For example, St. Luke tells the story of Jesus’ transfiguration as do the other Biblical authors but from his own perspective. When he reports the conversation of Jesus, Moses and Elijah on the mountain he says they spoke of Jesus’ “exodus.” Luke connects what Jesus is going through with the story of the Jewish people — an important perspective for each of us.
