At the beginning of his Gospel St. Mark depicts the baptism of Jesus. The Heavenly voice speaks to him, “You are my beloved son. I am well pleased with you.” To begin his ministry, Jesus had to know who he was, the beloved son. As his ministry is winding down St. Mark tells of the Transfiguration of Jesus. The Heavenly Voice returns and this time addresses the disciples saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Jesus’ identity as the beloved son is not meant just for him but serves as the validation of all that he is teaching. That pattern feels right — first identity, then mission. We must know ourselves as beloved of God so that we can bring good news to others.
