Even though Israel has a long coastline on the Mediterranean, they turned their back on the sea. They were not seafarers the way their neighbors were. Look at what happened to Jonah! The sea was a dangerous place filled with monsters. In fact, when the Book of Revelation envisions a “new heaven and a a new earth” it adds, “and the sea will be no more.” No more worries there. When Jesus shows his mastery over the sea (even the Sea of Galilee was dangerous) by calming the storm or by walking on water he was addressing one of the deep seated fears of the people. We must bring our own fears and worries to Jesus as well. He will be able to calm them.
