The prophet Nahum, one of the “twelve minor prophets,” ministered in the seventh century BC. During his time the Assyrian empire was conquered by the Babylonians and their capital, Nineveh, was destroyed. Assyria had been previously destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel and so it was with a certain satisfaction that Nahum pronounces God’s judgement. “Nineveh is destroyed; who can pity her?” The prophet invites Jerusalem to take a victory lap over the destruction of their ancient foe. He spoke prematurely. Soon it would be Babylon which would be at their door step leading to the destruction of city and temple. Perhaps this serves as a reminder not to get too up when things are going well or too down when things are going poorly.
