“You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” These words of Jesus which challenge St. Peter (and us) to think differently are vividly illustrated in the story of the Chosen People at Meribah. The Hebrew children thought (as we all tend to do) “What’s in in for me?” After God had delivered them from slavery, led them through the Red Sea, killed the soldiers pursuing them, fed them with manna, send quail to feed them in the camp, the Israelites basically said, “Yeah, but what have you done for me lately?” We need to adopt a way of thinking which notices all that God has done for us. We take for granted the blessings received instead of having and attitude of gratitude. When we notice the many ways we are already blessed and give God the thanks for those blessings, then we are able to have faith and confidence that the God who has brought us this far is not about to leave us now.
