The story of Jesus walking on the water is assigned as the daily reading for today and the gospel reading for next Sunday. Whenever such a duplication occurs I take it as a sign the the Holy Spirit wants us to pay special attention to the text. Today what struck me was the question of Jesus: “Why did you doubt?” You can imagine Peter’s exasperated reaction. “I doubted because all of this danger, all of this trouble surrounding me.” He forgot to keep his eyes on Jesus. The same thing happens in our lives. We notice the difficulties and the problems and it causes us to doubt God’s provident help. We must learn from St. Peter and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
