The people of Habakkuk’s time were experiencing great stress. They kept waiting for God’s intervention. The prophetic word: The vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; If it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late. Soon after this word of the Lord great catastrophe happened: the nation was conquered, the king was overthrown, the temple was destroyed. Was Habakkuk wrong? Or rather did the people need to reach a fuller understanding of what “the vision” of God was? Six hundred years after this word Jesus came as the fulfillment of the plan of God — not what the people expected but something infinitely better. “In the fullness of time” God shares human life.
