Ezekiel is the great prophet of the exile. Taken from homeland and after the temple is destroyed does the God of Israel still matter? Ezekiel has a powerful vision of God while in Babylon. He was surrounded with splendor. Like the bow which appears in the clouds on a rainy day was the splendor that surrounded him. Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. Ezekiel’s prophetic task was to keep faith alive in changed circumstance. We, like the ancient Israelites, can wonder about God’s presence when things are going poorly. Ezekiel’s message is that God is finished yet. The divine play is still at work, that something new is coming which will be even better than what was before.
