Many years ago when I was (not very successfully) being trained as a catechist I shadowed Sister Mary in her classroom one day. The children started acting up but instead of yelling for them to quiet down Sister started saying in a wee, small voice “You’re going to miss it.” As she walked around the room and the kids heard her they would hush and pay attention. They didn’t know what “it” was but they knew they didn’t want to miss it! Jesus told his disciples that the people had missed it when the didn’t recognize the significance of John the Baptist. I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him. How often in life we blithely go about our business missing the fact that God is tugging at our elbow. Let us use this time of Advent to take time in prayer seeing where God has broken into our lives in unexpected ways.
