“Awake from your slumber, arise from you sleep,” begins a popular song. This reflects the words of Jesus: “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy
from … the anxieties of daily life and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.” How easy it is to sleep walk through life. The dailiness of troubles, pain, difficulties numb us to the ungodliness around us. Think of how jaded our society has become at the prevalence of gun violence in the United States. As of October 4 there were 65 shootings on school campuses in 2018. We cannot become accustomed to this atrocity. Jesus challenges us to wake up to the gospel demand that we create a more just and peaceful society, “let us build a city of God.”
