“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” The great African bishop, St. Augustine, preached a sermon about Mary where he reminded the congregation that Mary was a member of the Church, “a preeminent member” to be sure, but still relying on the grace of Christ like us. Augustine goes on to say that we, like Mary, are obliged to bring Christ into the world. What she did by biological birth, we do by bringing Christ to birth in others by our example, proclamation, and service. We honor Mary not with admiration but by imitation of her making Christ come to life.
