A few years ago there was a movie about Pope Benedict meeting Cardinal Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis. While the movie did not treat Pope Benedict kindly it was accurate in sketching out the two varied visions of Church which each prelate held. Pope Benedict was looking to have a “purer” church even if that meant it would be smaller. He reflected the message of the prophet Zephaniah that all God needed was a “remnant.” I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, Who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD: the remnant of Israel. Pope Benedict believed that what the Church needed was more faithful members, a remnant, as others drifted away. Pope Francis, on the other hand, has an expansive vision of Church. He wants us to go “to the margins” and make sure that everyone feels included, that everyone knows they belong. Pope Francis will let God sort out who is “purer” or who isn’t. Two visions — which makes the most sense to you?
