Certain sayings in the scripture send a shiver up my spine. For example, St. Luke appends this thought the scene with Jesus and the disciples of John the Baptist: “the Pharisees and scholars of the law rejected the plan of God for themselves.” The Pharisees and the scholars were the ones who searched the scriptures and tried to follow them to the letter. I have no doubt that they imagined they were following the plan of God for themselves. But the evangelist thinks otherwise. What about us who are the good, church-going people, are we following God’s plan for us? The example of Jesus suggests that we can tell we are doing so when we bring healing to others and the poor have good news.
