The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. Joseph, like his Old Testament namesake, was a dreamer. No doubt he dreamt about what it was going to be like to be a married man, to have a son, to raise a family. That dream came crashing down on him when he found out his fiancee was pregnant and he knew that he was not the father. He had to trust in a new dream, the one that God had for him, the one that the angel whispered in his ear while he slept. No doubt, like Joseph, our idealized future never quite lives up to expectations. We might not get angelic visitors but we trust that God’s plan is better than ours.
