We are told that when the Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said. You would think hearing that you were “full of grace” would be welcome news instead of troubling. But maybe it was kind of like the boss coming to you and saying how great you are — the whole time you are waiting for the shoe to drop as she gives you one more thing to do. So when the angel continues you have found favor with God Mary understands that does not mean everything will be peachy-keen from then on. God’s favor does not imply that there will be no more troubles. Rather, it means that no matter the bumps on the road God will be there for you. We, like Mary, are at times “greatly troubled” when life throws us a curve ball. But, like Mary, we are called to trust in God’s plan for us. May it be done to me according to your word.
