Mary was a first responder. She heard about her kinswoman’s delicate condition and, no doubt, asked herself, “Who will be there to help her?” Even though she was newly pregnant and a four day walking journey away Mary realized that she was the one who could respond. And she did. That models the Christian life. We are called to be first responders. When we hear of the troubles and difficulties in this world we too can wonder, “Who will help the hungry to be fed? Who will take the initial step to heal this family breach? Who will help to bring peace into our neighborhood?” We’re the ones, that’s who. There isn’t anyone out there but us. If we don’t do it, who will?
