Today is the only day of the year when a selection from the Biblical book the Song of Songs is included in the lectionary — and there is even an alternative if you don’t want to use the selection. The erotic love poetry in this bit of divine revelation seems to be a bit much for some people! The book’s inclusion in the Bible, however, is a reminder that our relationship with God is more more like a love affair than it is a set of logical propositions. As the world’s literature demonstrates love can make you do crazy things. The passionate love believers have for God compel them to love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, and forgive those who harm them.
