It is important to understand that the Bible stories are about real people. For example, Mary probably was experiencing the initial signs of pregnancy — fatigue, nausea, soreness, etc.– as she set out for the visitation. Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah. She undertook the ninety mile journey (either on foot or by mule) from Nazareth to Judea to care for her relative Elizabeth. It must have been uncomfortable. I am often tempted to put off doing something that needs to get done until a more auspicious time. I’m too tired, I’m too busy, there’s too much going on, I’m on my last nerve. Mary demonstrates that it is always the right time to act with compassion, with care, with devotion, with kindness.
