When Mary greeted Elizabeth she sang a hymn of praise to God that we refer to by its Latin title, the Magnificat. “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord … The Almighty has done great things for me,” If I were going to sing of the “great things” the Lord has done for me it might come after a good report from the doctor or after that car did swerve before slamming into me or after I found six good numbers. Mary sang her song after she became a pregnant teenager, after she disgraced herself before her fiance and the whole town, after having walked ninety miles (no doubt experiencing morning sickness.) Mary models that God is blessing me right here and right now.
