Every parent echoes the words of the people at the birth of John the Baptist. “What, then, will this child be?” Unfortunately all to often the answer becomes: “He could have been a prophet but air pollution in the neighborhood gave him asthma so he could not speak with authority.” “She could have been a prophet but a lack of adequate food stunted her growth and development.” “He could have been a prophet but an inadequate education inhibited his ability to present a meaningful message.” The Church is involved in issues of education, the environment and health not because we are “woke” or politically correct. We involve ourselves in social issues so that every child can grow up to their full potential as God intended.
