“Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in? … The LORD reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. ” God told David, I’ve got news for you, buddy. You don’t do for me, I do for you. There is a human tendency to imagine that the good we do somehow or other make us worthy of God’s love. Mother Teresa, for example, used to tell her sisters, “Let’s do something beautiful for God.” However, the point of the Christmas story is that God chose to share a human life with us not because of anything we have done but as a sheer gift, not because we deserved it but because we needed it.
