On the third day of Christmas the Church does not talk about three French hens but rather Saint John the Evangelist. Besides the Gospel that bears his name there are three epistles ascribed to him. The first starts off: “What we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life — for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it.” What an apt Christmas reflection. The Evangelist bears witness to the reality of “God-with-us.” In Jesus the very presence of God is someone we can see and touch and hear. Let’s keep our eyes and ears open today and touch the presence of God in our lives.
