What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life — for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it. There is a temptation to yearn for the good old days. “Wouldn’t it have been great to be like St. John and have walked and talked with Jesus.” No doubt. When we do so, we always imagine that we would have been one of the faithful ones. We would never have left Jesus to die alone on the cross! Of course the reality is that as we are now, so we would have been then. The truth is that these are the good old days for us. Remember the teaching of Jesus: whatsoever you do for the least, you do for me. We have the opportunity to hear the cry of the poor and respond with generosity as Jesus did. We have seen with our eyes injustice toward the immigrant, the marginalized, the minority. We can look upon the children who need direction and support to fulfill their eternal destiny. We can touch with our hands those who feel lost or alone or depressed to let them know that they belong and are part of the family of God. We testify to our faith in Jesus by the way we treat the presence of Christ embodied in those around us.
