There was a fad a few years ago which included wearing bracelets, hats, t-shirts with the message WWJD, what would Jesus do. While, like most fad, it was somewhat banal, the truth of the underlying message is found in the first epistle of St. John: This is the way we may know that we are in union with Jesus: whoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked. St. John goes on to tell us how Jesus walked, in love. If we want to do as Jesus did we must love as Jesus loved — loving the saint and the sinner, the good and the bad, those who love us and those who don’t. If we want to do what Jesus would do in our time as he did in his we must show patience, compassion, generosity, forgiveness in the providence of our everyday life. Just don’t be surprised if we walk as Jesus walked that we too will experience opposition and resistance as he did.
