Attention to the season of Advent can cure us of the “cuteness” factor that can creep into Christmas. Whenever you see a new born child there is temptation to just say “ahhh.” But Advent reminds us that the new born Jesus is not the occasion for sentimentality but a call to conversion. The prophet Isaiah tells us that the coming of Messiah requires the creation of a more just and peaceful society. “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” Jesus tells us that in the kingdom of God all are welcomed. “Many will come from the east and the west and will recline … at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.” Advent challenges us out of our comfort zone.
